MSc Clinical Epidemiology

The Master's program in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research is primarily designed to serve the needs of health care providers (physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dentists, etc.) who wish to have formal training to do the research necessary to base health care delivery and clinical practice on the best evidence of effectiveness and with the most efficient use of scarce resources.

The purpose of the program is to provide students with the skills to conduct effective research as an independent researcher. It includes the following objectives that the students upon the completion of their MSc studies should be able:

  • To assess critically the results of clinical and health care research in reading the clinical literature, and to use the results of research in daily clinical practice and in teaching in clinical-training programs.
  • To serve as a "bridge" person and play a leadership role in translating the results of effectiveness and efficiency research into: clinical practice policies (practice guidelines), health policies, and reimbursement policies (e.g., the decision-making process of drugs and medical-devices approval).
  • To teach the principles of clinical and health care research to graduate students in research training programs.
  • To collaborate with other investigators on research projects and contribute to the research their unique skills - a combination of clinical knowledge of the conditions under study and research design.
  • To undertake clinical and health care research as an independent investigator, and be able to compete for peer-reviewed funding.
  • To assist other health care providers and researchers in the design and implementation of clinical and health care research.
